A two-vehicle collision on Tuesday evening resulted in the minor injuries of three Silvercreek residents. The accident occurred around 10:30 p.m. at the intersection of Newtown Street and Pine Point Road, according to the Silvercreek Sheriff’s Office. After a failure to yield to oncoming traffic, a red sedan struck the driver’s side of a gray minivan while traveling at medium speed. “As is protocol, our deputies, along with the Silvercreek Fire Department, responded swiftly after receiving a call from a witness at the site of the accident,” said William Foster, the spokesperson of the Silvercreek Sheriff’s Office. “Traffic was blocked off for just over an hour to render aid, interview those involved and clear debris. We thank the motorists in the area for their patience.”
Eighteen-year-old Ricardo Lopez, the driver of the sedan, was taken to Bowie Memorial Hospital for treatment following the crash. The driver and passenger of the minivan were tended to by paramedics at the scene for scrapes and bruises. “The driver of the sedan will have a short stay in the hospital, but is expected to make a speedy recovery,” Foster said. “Thankfully, everyone involved was wearing seatbelts at the time of the collision. The situation could have been much worse.” Foster said alcohol did not play any factor in the crash, attributing the accident to simple human error. Jon Yorke, 51, witnessed the incident and called it in to dispatch. “They really need to do something about this intersection,” Yorke said. “My cousin actually had a wreck out here a few months back. If they had regular traffic lights instead of those flashing yellows, it wouldn’t be such an accident magnet.”
